SpaceX buys Cursor in a record $60B deal

SpaceX is buying Cursor, the AI coding tool, for $60 billion in stock — the biggest startup acquisition ever. The deal came just days after SpaceX's record stock market debut, and its rising share price was used to pay for it. Cursor brings over $4B in yearly revenue and a large base of developer users, which helps SpaceX compete with Anthropic and OpenAI in coding tools.

With major companies investing heavily in AI coding tools, daily work for software engineers may change as these tools become more central to how code gets written.

US government forces Anthropic to shut off new AI models

On June 12, 2026, the U.S. government ordered Anthropic to block its top models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for all foreign users — citing national security. Anthropic could not filter by nationality fast enough, so it turned both models off for everyone, worldwide, across all major cloud platforms. The order was reportedly triggered by a claimed "jailbreak," which Anthropic says is minor and disputes. Other Claude models still work, and the company is fighting the order.

It's a notable early example of the U.S. government stepping in to regulate access to AI models, which points to a shifting rule landscape for products built on them.

Tech workers who use AI are less likely to be laid off

Bloomberg reports new Gallup research: tech workers who use AI monthly have about a 6% chance of being laid off, versus 18% for those who don't. That's three times less risk for regular AI users. The finding comes during a year of heavy tech layoffs, when many companies are cutting jobs and pointing to AI as a reason.

AI fluency is becoming a common expectation for tech roles, which may shape how teams hire and work.
